Facilities, Amenities, and Open Space

BACKGROUND

The Parks and Recreation Department, during each spring from 2012 through 2019, have worked with Brighton High School on park beautification projects with their High School Seniors.  (The Seniors have completed eight beautification projects within the City’s Open Space and Parks instead of participating in “Senior Ditch Day”. The ninth and tenth beautification projects were during the 2020 to 2021 Coronavirus COVID19 Pandemic and the Senior classes were not allowed to attend because of the Pandemic.  The City’s Parks and Open Space Division ordered and planted the trees per approval of Adams County.)  In 2022, the High School Seniors are scheduled to again participate in the tree planting project.

Due to the success and growth in participants of the past ten grant funded High School Seniors Beautification Projects; the High School Seniors will again work with the City’s Parks and Recreation Department - Parks and Open Space Division on this project.  The Division realizes that Donelson Park is in need of an additional 30 trees.  And this High School Seniors Beautification Project is an appropriate project for the senior class in late April/early May 2022.  Payment for a portion of the trees is what is being requested in this Adams County Open Space Mini-Grant.

The total amount of the proposed Adams County Open Space Mini-Grant application project is $5,000.00.  The City’s match for this Project is $2,500.00 (50.0% of the total) for the purchase of trees.  The City will also provide the supplies for planting the trees.  These supplies consist of stakes, ties, cord, small tools, etc.  The $2,500.00 will be budgeted in the 2022 Recreation Capital Fund.  The $2,500.00 (50.0% of the total) of Adams County Open Space Mini-Grant funding will be used to purchase the remaining amount of trees.

The Mini-Grant application must be submitted prior to the afternoon of September 30, 2021.  In order to receive the Adams County Grant, the attached Resolution must be approved by City Council prior to submitting the Grant Application. The Resolution authorizes the City to apply for Adams County Open Space Grant funding through the Mini-Grant Application and authorizes the City Manager to sign the Grant Application.

FINANCIAL IMPACT

Awarded Adams County Open Space Mini-Grant funds in the amount not to exceed $2,500.00 will be used for the “High School Seniors Beautification Project at Donelson Park”.  This project includes 30 trees for planting.  The City will budget a match of $2,500.00 in the 2022 Recreation Capital Budget.  The total project is $5,000.00.
