INTRODUCTION / PURPOSE

The purpose of this action is to have the City Council consider naming the new Municipal Service Center (MSC) after former Public Works Director Michael Woodruff.

BACKGROUND & ANALYSIS

Article II, Section 2.3 of the City of Brighton Charter gives the City of Brighton power over its real and personal property, and authorizes the City to adopt ordinances and resolutions necessary or desirable for the general health, safety, and welfare of its citizens.

On May 3rd, 2005, the City Council of the City of Brighton exercised its power over its real and personal property by adopting Resolution No. 05-52, a Resolution approving the “Amended Policy for Naming Public Amenities and Parks and Recreation facilities within the City of Brighton 2005”. No updates to the amended policy have occurred since Resolution No. 05-52 was adopted and the Citizen Committee that reviewed the naming nominations no longer seems to be in existence.

Staff is recommending that the City Council rescind Resolution No 05-52 and its companion Policy for Naming Public Amenities and Parks and Recreation facilities within the City of Brighton 2005. Staff is recommending that we develop a new policy with criteria for naming public amenities, parks, and buildings. In the interim until such policy is adopted, the City Council may choose to name the new Municipal Services Center after former Director Michael Woodruff to commemorate Mr. Woodruff’s dedication to the City and his work in helping turn the idea of a new municipal services center into reality.

OPTIONS FOR CONSIDERATION

The City Council has three (3) actions it can take after reviewing this application. It may:

1.                     Approve the Resolution

2.                     Not approved the Resolution

3.                     Continue the item to a later, specified date if the City Council feels it needs more information to make an informed decision.
