PURPOSE

Requesting City Council approval of a resolution approving the placement of a plaque on Memorial Parkway recognizing Guadalupe Briseño for her service to the Brighton Community.

BACKGROUND

Guadalupe Briseño has had a positive impact on the Brighton community and demonstrated leadership benefiting the community. In 1968 she started a union to help the suffering workers at the Kitayama Floral Plant. Guadalupe and four other women went on strike to bring attention to the deplorable conditions at the Plant. When 27J school district decided to shut down Northeast Elementary school, she petitioned to keep it open. She also asked others to donate school supplies to underprivileged children. After the strike, she worked at a nursing home where the patients only wore gowns. She collected funds and found a seamstress to make them all pajamas to wear.

FINANCIAL IMPACT

The purchase and installation of the plaque, stone, and landscape of a memorial along the path in Memorial Parkway costs approximately $1,500 and will come from the Parks and Recreation capital fund. Funding is available yearly for projects of this nature.
