Reference: Brighton Municipal Code Relating to Youth Membership on Boards and Commissions
To: Mayor Gregory Mills and Members of City Council
Through: Michael P. Martinez, City Manager
Prepared By: Tawnya Russell, Manager of Youth Services
Date Prepared: June 25, 2024
PURPOSE
To amend the municipal code, ensuring consistency between the Brighton Youth Commission and youth membership on all city boards and commissions.
BACKGROUND
In 2022, through Ordinance No. 2385, City Council expanded the eligibility criteria for the Brighton Youth Commission. This expansion allowed individuals with significant ties with the city, such as but not limited to, attending secondary schools within the city, working at a business located within the city, or other evidence of substantial and significant ties to the city, to join the commission.
Currently, youth members of the Planning Commission/Board of Adjustment, Historic Preservation Commission, and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board are required to reside within the City of Brighton. This places a limitation on appointing youth to city boards.
The proposed ordinance seeks to amend the Brighton Municipal Code to align the eligibility criteria for youth membership on all City Boards and Commissions with the membership eligibility already in place for the Brighton Youth Commission.
