PURPOSE

To amend the Brighton Municipal Code Section 2-4-13 Nomination Petitions to align with the Colorado Revised Statutes.

BACKGROUND

The Brighton Municipal Code currently allows nomination petitions for Mayor or City Council to be circulated beginning on the ninety-first day and ending on the fifty-seventh day prior to the election. Section  1-4-805 of the Colorado Revised Statutes require that a nomination petition be filed with the municipal clerk no later than the seventy-first day prior to the election. The Brighton Municipal Code will be amended to require the date for filing a nomination petition be changed from the fifty-seventh day prior to the election to the seventy-first day prior to the election to align with State Statute.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends approval of the Code Amendment so the requirements in the Brighton Municipal Code align with the requirements in State Statute.
