PURPOSE
Be Brighton, the current Comprehensive Plan, was adopted by the Planning Commission and ratified by the City Council in 2016. There have been several changes within the City of Brighton since then, and it is best practice to revisit the goals and strategies within the Comprehensive Plan every 10 years to consider such changes.
In 2024, City Council approved funding for the following fiscal year to create a new Comprehensive Plan. In June 2025, the city hired Design Workshop as the lead consultant for this project. The city is in the early stages of developing a Community Engagement Plan and Project Management Plan with Design Workshop. The draft plan is scheduled to be complete late Summer of 2026 and presented to Planning Commission for adoption and City Council for ratification by the end of 2026.
PROCESSES
Per the Land Use and Development Code Section 1.03B, the Planning Commission is responsible for overseeing long range planning and the comprehensive plan decisions and recommendations. For long range cooperative purposes, there may be joint planning sessions in order to understand all recommendations and decisions pertaining to the Comprehensive Plan. The Comprehensive Plan is also subject to ratification by City Council.
