PURPOSE
A Resolution approving the Master Plan and placement of the "Brighton Vietnam Veterans Memorial" at 4th and Jessup.
BACKGROUND
In October of 2016 a group of Vietnam War Veterans came to City Council requesting that a memorial be constructed to recognize the Vietnam Veterans for their service. The memorial was to recognize those Veterans from the Brighton area. Staff was directed to develop a plan for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Staff along with a group of Vietnam Veterans met three times to design the Master Plan for the memorial. The memorial will be placed on the corner of 4th and Jessup in front of the well. The memorial will consist of 8 stones, 3 for Army and one for each the Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard. The Army has the largest number of persons that served in Vietnam. The one stone is the central stone naming the memorial and one stone to recognize those Killed in action. The names of the persons who served in Vietnam for each branch of service will be engraved into the memorial. To date there are over 150 names of persons that served in Vietnam. There will be three flag poles and two solar light poles. There are funds to re-landscape the area. The Master Plan for the Vietnam Memorial was presented to the City Council in February.
Once the Master Plan and location for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial has been approved, staff will continue to meet with the Vietnam Veterans group to complete the design details. We anticipate the Memorial will be completed for Memorial Da...
