Date Prepared:                     October 4, 2017

PURPOSE

To approve a Resolution calling for the December 5, 2017 Special Run-off Municipal Mail Ballot Election, if one is needed, appointing the City Clerk as the designated election official, and instructing the City Clerk regarding the conduct of the election.

BACKGROUND

On November 7, 2017 the City will participate in a Coordinated Election with Adams County and Weld County and three (3) candidates will be listed on the ballot for the open Mayor, Ward 1 and Ward 2 Council Member positions. If no candidate for Mayor, Council Member from Ward 1 and Ward 2 received a majority of the votes cast for such office as required in Article III, Section 3.6 of the City of Brighton Charter, a run-off election is required and will take place on December 5, 2017 between the two (2) candidates who received the highest number of votes for each position.  Once the November 7th Coordinated Election is complete, if it is determined that a Special Run-Off Election is required, the City Clerk will prepare another resolution for City Council consideration at its special meeting on November 9th that will set the ballot content (names of the two candidates for each position) and address such other issues associated with the special election as publishing the notice of election, mailing the ballots, appointing election judges, and designating the location of the election.
