PURPOSE
Update on Eye for Art-on-Loan (Sculpture) Program for the Carmichael Park Sculpture Walk.

BACKGROUND

In 2011, the City established the Eye for Art (E4A) Board with the goal of acquiring artwork for New City Hall, with a secondary goal to include large artwork/sculptures for the grounds surrounding the building when funding was available.

The Art-on-Loan Sculpture Program addresses the secondary goal set for E4A for the placement of large artwork/sculpture on the grounds surrounding the City Hall building. The 2016 placement of the two pieces acquired in 2015 through the E4A program provided the visibility for promoting the “Art-on-Loan” outdoor program for the Carmichael Park Sculpture Walk. Capital funding is allocated to support the goal of acquiring and installing large artwork/sculpture in Carmichael Park.  The placement of art in Carmichael Park will create a community of visual inspiration for our citizens and travelling visitors to our community.

The Art-on-Loan program will kick off with 17-month display of five large sculptures placed along the walkways in Carmichael Park.  The five pieces were selected through the following process.

FIRST SELECTION PROCESS

A subcommittee of the Eye for Art Board, members of the Brighton Cultural Arts Commission, along with community members and management staff developed the following criteria for the first selection process:

Submittals were accepted via Café process system from national and local artists.   Forty-four art pieces were submitted for consideration.  The jury consisting of local artists, other boards and the community narrowed the entries to the final five pieces being presented today.

Criteria for selections

1.                     Is the sculpture something you would be proud to put your name on?

2.                     Is the sculpture sturdy enough to withstand the weather changes?

3.                     Is the sculpture safe enough for public interaction if touched?

4.                     Is the sculpture something that you feel most observers will enjoy or create conversation?

5.                     Will the sculpture fit at our location?
