PURPOSE
A Resolution authorizing the City of Brighton to submit to Adams County Open Space, an Open Space Mini-Grant Application requesting grant funding in the amount not to exceed $5,000.00 for the “High School Seniors Beautification Project at Brighton Sports Complex”; and to authorize the City Manager to sign the Grant Application.

STRATEGIC FOCUS AREA

Facilities, Amenities, and Open Space

BACKGROUND

The Parks and Recreation Department, during each spring from 2012 through 2018, have worked with Brighton High School on park beautification projects with their High School Seniors.  (The Seniors have completed seven beautification projects within the City’s Open Space and Parks instead of participating in “Senior Ditch Day”.)

Due to the success and growth in participants of the past seven High School Seniors Beautification Projects; the High School Seniors will again work with the City’s Parks and Recreation Department - Parks and Open Space Division on this project.  The Division realizes that the Brighton Sports Complex is in need of additional trees throughout the complex, and this High School Seniors Beautification Project is an appropriate project for the senior class in May 2019.  Payment for a portion of the trees is what is being requested in this Adams County Open Space Mini-Grant.

The total amount of the proposed Adams County Open Space Mini-Grant application is $12,070.00.  The City’s match for this Project is $7,070.00 (58.6% of the total) for the purchase of trees and supplies for planting.  These supplies consist of stakes, ties, cord, wheel barrow, etc.  This $5,000.00 (41.4% of the total) Adams County Open Space Mini-Grant funding will be used to purchase the remaining amount of trees.  (Adams County Open Space “active mini-grant” projects must have minimum municipal match of 40% or greater.)

In order to receive the Adams County Grant monies, the attached Resolution must be approved by City Council prior to submitting the Grant Application.  The grant must be submitted by July 25, 2018.  The Resolution authorizes the City to apply for Adams County Open Space Grant funding through the Mini-Grant Application, and authorizes the City Manager to sign the Grant Application.

FINANCIAL IMPACT

Awarded Adams County Open Space Mini-Grant funds in the amount not to exceed $5,000.00 will be used for the “High School Seniors Beautification Project at Brighton Sports Complex”.  This project includes trees and supplies for planting.  The City will budget a match of $7,070.00 in the 2019 Recreation Capital Budget.  The total project is $12,070.00.
