BACKGROUND
Established in 2005, the Brighton Youth Commission is a body of 22 youth and six adults who study, investigate, and implement projects on matters that impact youth in the city. The current Code states that the commission shall consist of the following: 20 commission members, two alternate members, one City Council member, one 27J Schools Board Member or Employee, four At-Large Citizen Representatives (adults), and one Non-Voting Ex-Officio Staff Member. Since the Commission's inception, Brighton's population has grown by about 50 percent. This growth has translated to an increase of youth in our community and an expanded school district. In 2005, there were 11 middle and high schools in the School District 27J boundaries. The district's total enrollment was 10,450. In 2022, there are 17 middle and high schools and the district's total enrollment is 20,338. Since 2005, the roles, responsibilities, and reach of the Youth Commission have also expanded. The Code has not been updated since 2011. These suggested changes are proposed to reflect the growth of the community and to continue to build an inclusive body that represents the youth in our community.
